A spectacular cultural celebration of Chinese traditions took centre stage in Sweden as the Zhejiang Happy Chinese New Year performance troupe brought their vibrant showcase to Stockholm, marking the latest chapter in their global festivities. The event series, which followed a successful Spring Festival celebration in Malta, captivated Swedish audiences with a series of performances and immersive cultural experiences.
Organised by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism, and in partnership with the China Cultural Center in Stockholm, the “Happy Chinese New Year • Lantern Festival Fair” event series began with a memorable cultural program at the International School of Kungsholmen on February 10. The event, attended by 200 students and teachers, brought Chinese New Year traditions to life, seamlessly blending the festive spirit with the cultural essence of Zhejiang Province.
The program provided the Swedish audience with an immersive journey into the richness of Chinese heritage through traditional customs and artistic performances. The school’s cultural diversity was enriched as the event fostered cross-cultural understanding and created an inclusive environment. For Chinese students at the school, the event held added significance, reinforcing their cultural identity and further strengthening ties within the international school community. The celebration was lauded for bringing a sense of shared cultural celebration to the institution, earning positive feedback from the school’s staff and students.
On February 11, the festivities continued at the China Cultural Center in Stockholm, where the centre was transformed into a vibrant space adorned with colourful lanterns in celebration of the upcoming Lantern Festival. The event attracted more than 150 Chinese culture enthusiasts and offered them an engaging and interactive experience.
The 2025 Lantern Festival celebration held special importance this year as it marked the first Spring Festival since Chinese New Year was officially recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. To honour this prestigious recognition, the Zhejiang performance troupe curated an extensive array of activities, offering Swedish participants a deeper understanding of the cultural significance and value of Chinese New Year traditions.
The successful events not only showcased China’s rich cultural heritage but also marked a significant step forward in deepening the cultural ties between China and Sweden. This year also celebrates the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, providing a perfect backdrop for strengthening cultural collaboration and fostering mutual understanding.
The event series highlighted the role of culture in fostering global connections and building bridges between nations. By bringing Chinese traditions to life in Sweden, the Zhejiang Happy Chinese New Year performance troupe helped to promote a greater understanding of Chinese customs and contributed to enhanced international relations. As the anniversary year continues, the celebration serves as a testament to the growing cultural exchange and cooperation between China and Sweden, paving the way for future dialogue and mutual prosperity across various sectors.
