The West Midlands has been named the best county in the UK to launch a business, according to new data that highlights key factors such as start-up rates, business growth, broadband speeds, and access to London.

The region came out on top due to its robust business community, with 13,785 new businesses founded in the past year alone, the highest number in the UK. The West Midlands is also home to a significant concentration of ‘high-growth’ businesses, offering entrepreneurs a wealth of talent and opportunities for expansion. These factors, combined with strong broadband speeds averaging 93.4Mbps and a proximity of just 115 miles from London, make the area a prime location for new ventures.

The research, conducted by ultrafast broadband provider Trooli, ranks counties based on essential attributes for business success. The West Midlands’ thriving economy, skilled workforce, and strategic location in the heart of England give it a competitive edge, with convenient transport links connecting the area to the rest of the UK. This makes it an ideal environment for businesses looking to grow.

Hertfordshire ranked second on the list, benefiting from its easy access to London, which is just 16 miles away. The county also boasts over 230 high-growth businesses, according to official data, making it a strong contender for start-up entrepreneurs. Its proximity to the capital and the thriving business ecosystem nearby offers an attractive option for those looking to establish themselves outside of London’s competitive market.

Berkshire took third place, offering exceptional broadband speeds (88.5Mbps) and a strategic location 48 miles from London. The county is renowned for its connectivity, providing start-ups with the advantage of excellent infrastructure without the hefty costs of London-based operations. With its thriving business community and strong economic activity, Berkshire provides a fertile ground for new businesses looking to expand.

Andy Conibere, CEO of Trooli, commented on the findings: “With a record number of businesses launched last year, we wanted to investigate the best locations across the UK for entrepreneurs. The results show that areas with reliable broadband, great connectivity, and a thriving business environment like the West Midlands offer immense opportunities. We hope this report encourages even more businesses to start and grow in these regions.”

The report comes at a time when entrepreneurship in the UK is seeing a resurgence, with the country witnessing an increase in new business ventures across various industries. With a strong economy, better access to resources, and growing digital infrastructure, regions like the West Midlands are positioning themselves as attractive hubs for the next wave of entrepreneurs.

The full top 10 counties to start a business are:

    1. West Midlands
    2. Hertfordshire
    3. Berkshire
    4. Northamptonshire
    5. Greater Manchester
    6. Surrey
    7. Essex
    8. Hampshire
    9. Bedfordshire
    10. Kent

This report provides valuable insights for those considering where to launch a new business and highlights the significant role regional hubs play in the UK’s entrepreneurial landscape.
