As millions of Brits make travel plans for Christmas, a new survey reveals that half of those relying on rail services are concerned about delays and cancellations that could derail their festive trips.
Car sharing marketplace Turo commissioned a survey of 2,000 Brits who don’t own a car, ahead of a special one-day promotion at London’s Victoria Station. The research, conducted by Censuswide, sheds light on the growing stress faced by car-less travellers who may struggle to reach their destinations on time.
The survey results indicate that 32% of respondents planning to travel home for Christmas are anxious they won’t arrive in time, with over half of rail users (51%) particularly concerned about disruptions. Younger adults appear to be the most worried: 39% of those aged 18-34 expressed concerns, compared to just 18% of over-55s.
The research also highlights that travel problems have already caused 17% of respondents to miss out on Christmas celebrations in the past, with rail delays and cancellations topping the list of reasons. The ongoing disruptions to rail services over the Christmas period have become a regular concern for many. Engineering works, staff shortages, and strikes have repeatedly caused severe delays, with 2022’s strikes alone leading to six days of major disruptions.
While many car-less Brits are worried about the impact of unreliable train services, a significant portion (22%) are not planning to go home at all this Christmas due to the lack of a car. For those who do intend to travel, cars are the preferred method of transport, with 42% citing the convenience, comfort, and flexibility of driving over other options.
Turo is responding to these concerns by offering commuters a chance to book a car at Victoria Station. The platform, which allows people to rent cars without owning one, is offering 15% off bookings and a £1,000 voucher as part of its seasonal promotion.
The survey also revealed the social pressures car-less travellers face. Over half of respondents (52%) said they wish they could visit more friends and family over the festive period, with 67% of 18-24-year-olds and 64% of 25-34-year-olds saying they miss out on seeing loved ones due to travel constraints.
Relationship tensions also arise when couples must navigate the tricky question of which family to visit for Christmas. Thirty percent of respondents said decisions about whose family to see caused strain in their relationships.
Many car-less travellers also feel a sense of dependence during the holidays. More than half (56%) of those surveyed will rely on family members for rides, with 35% admitting it makes them feel like they have to follow someone else’s schedule, and 31% saying they feel like a “burden.”
Rory Brimmer, director at Turo, commented on the findings: “While owning a car may not make sense for many urbanites, the lack of flexibility at Christmas can make travel stressful. There is an alternative, and Turo offers a solution that lets people travel in comfort and style, without the hassle of car ownership or relying on unreliable rail services.” To learn more about Turo, please visit www.turo.com.
