A Morecambe-based cheerleading team is preparing for the biggest competition of their careers, having secured a place at the Summit Championships 2025 in Orlando, Florida this May.
Stormers Elite, founded by head coach Faye Winder in 2009, will represent the UK at the prestigious event, which is widely regarded as the pinnacle of cheerleading. Competing in both the under and over-16 categories, the team’s qualification is the result of years of dedicated training and perseverance.
The Road to Orlando
Stormers Elite, formerly known as Bay Stormers, have come close to qualification in previous years, missing out by the narrowest of margins. But this season, their efforts paid off.
“We’ve competed in Bournemouth and Barcelona, but in the end, it was Blackpool where we secured our place,” says assistant head coach Lauren Potter. “With only six team places available, winning two of them in the North West was a truly special moment.”
While qualification was a significant achievement, the next challenge is funding the trip. With a squad of 38 athletes, coaches, and supporters, the costs—including entry fees, travel, accommodation, equipment, and training—amount to approximately £2,000 per participant.
Families are covering the cost of flights, while businesses and local sponsors are stepping in to support the rest. Lancaster-based ICS Accounting, a long-time supporter of the team, is leading the fundraising efforts alongside other sponsors, including EDF, TVS Supply Chain Solutions, and Wrenman Strategic Land.
Training for the World’s Best
Once in Orlando, the team will have a week to acclimatise and train, hiring gym space for at least three intensive sessions before taking the stage against the world’s best cheerleading squads.
“At this level, everything has to be perfect, from routines to uniforms,” says Potter. “Every shoelace, bow, and jacket needs to be precisely matched. We’re incredibly grateful to our sponsors and parents for making this possible.”
More Than Just a Competition
Beyond the competition, the trip is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many of the athletes. For some, it will be their first time travelling abroad, making the experience even more special.
“Cheerleading is about more than just sport—it builds confidence, social connections, and mental resilience,” says ICS Accounting Commercial Director Colin Thompson. “Stormers Elite is a fantastic example of inclusivity and dedication, and we’re proud to support them.”
As the team continues training, organising, and fundraising, they remain focused on their ultimate goal: making Morecambe proud on the international stage.
“To be representing our hometown, in the heart of the entertainment industry, is a dream come true,” says Potter. “If we bring home a trophy, none of us will be touching the ground—and not just because of backflips!”
