Runners in Greater Manchester are invited to participate in a special series of races at Heaton Park, benefiting Francis House Children’s Hospice, with half-price entry fees in exchange for sponsorship support. The events, organised by RunThrough, will take place at Heaton Park in Higher Blackley, renowned for its expansive grounds and the historic Grade I-listed Heaton Hall.
The Run Heaton Park series will kick off on Sunday, 1st December, offering participants the choice of a 5k, 10k, or half marathon. As the official charity partner, Francis House Children’s Hospice has partnered with RunThrough to provide half-price entry fees for those pledging to raise at least £50. This means that participants aged 11 and above can register for £12 for the 5k, £13 for the 10k, and £14 for the half marathon.
Francis House, based in Manchester, offers crucial support to children and young people with life-limiting illnesses, providing respite, end-of-life care, and additional support to their families. With around 2,000 people supported at any time, the hospice’s services encompass home care, sibling support, emotional counselling, and bereavement support.
James Ferguson, a fundraising officer for Francis House, highlighted the positive impact of the event, saying, “Run Heaton Park in support of Francis House offers an incredible opportunity for our community to come together, get active, and make a real difference to the lives of the children and families who rely on the compassionate care provided by their local children’s hospice. As the charity sponsor, we are excited to support runners of all abilities.”
The course within Heaton Park is a 5km loop of undulating tarmac paths that provide a scenic, yet challenging, route. Starting near the park’s centre, runners begin with a flat section around Heaton Park lake, followed by a challenging hill section near Heaton Hall that provides sweeping views of Manchester. The 5k runners will complete one lap, 10k runners will do two laps, and half marathon participants will take on four laps, with an added section at the start. All races will be chip-timed, and each finisher will receive a themed medal.
Francis House supporters who participate will also receive a branded running t-shirt, a fundraising pack, and in-person support on the day to boost their efforts. RunThrough co-founder Matt Wood expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to partner with Francis House Hospice for the Run Heaton Park race. Their incredible work supporting children and families in need makes this collaboration truly special. Running has always been about more than just the race—it’s about coming together to make a difference.”
Further events are planned on 12th January, 30th March, 5th October, and 30th November in 2025, providing multiple opportunities for participants to contribute to the cause while staying active. Charity place registration closes 10 days before each event.
