Germany has challenged Türkiye’s attempt to secure EU recognition of döner kebab as a traditional product. To address these objections, Bereket Döner has unveiled a scholarly study affirming döner’s Turkish origins.
At a press briefing held in Istanbul on 5th December, Bereket Döner showcased research that underscores the dish’s historical and cultural importance.
“Our research demonstrates that döner is deeply rooted in Turkish history and culture,” said Mevlüt Ceyhun Tekdemir, Vice Chairman of Bereket Döner’s Board. “From Takiyeddin Efendi’s 16th-century mechanical drawings to insights from Evliya Çelebi, our evidence leaves no doubt about döner’s origins. We trust the European Commission to recognise this heritage appropriately.”
The study, Türkiye’s World-Famous Delicacy: Döner, traces döner’s history back to the Ottoman era, using artefacts and documentation to validate its Turkish heritage.
Uniting Cultures Through Döner
“Döner is not about division; it’s about unity,” Tekdemir remarked. “It’s a culinary tradition that brings people together, blending cultures and tastes in a unique way.”
Bereket Döner further revealed plans to expand its Döner Point chain across Europe, beginning in Germany. This initiative aims to bring authentic Turkish döner to a broader audience.
“We’re excited to bring the true taste of Turkish döner to Europe,” said Tekdemir. “Our expansion strategy reflects our commitment to preserving and sharing this cultural treasure with the world.”
Bereket Döner remains steadfast in its mission to preserve döner kebab’s legacy and share its cultural relevance with the world.
